"Looking at Lincoln: Political Cartoons from the Civil War Era" a panel display at Shasta Elementary School (Old Shasta), 10446 Red Bluff Rd., Shasta.  10-2 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 or Thursday Feb. 2 from 5-7 p.m.  View the entire display and choose one cartoon and comment on the style of the drawing, the words and images used and what you feel they convey on a cursory look AND what the deeper meaning of the cartoon might  have been to the people of that era.  Due 2/10/12.

1.      Describe Mark Twain’s experience with Salt Lake City prices.  How does this label him and his brother “emigrants”?

2.     How do you think Twain’s portrayal of the Goshute Indians was received by the readers back home?  Why do you think Twain presents Native Americans in this way?

3.     Why did Twain tire of the Horace Greeley anecdote?

4.     Explain Twain’s use of hyperbole (ultimate exaggeration) in describing the Washoe Zephyr.

5.     Give an example of hyperbole in chapter XXII (22)

6.     Explain how Twain was duped buying the “Mexican Plug” horse and how he got rid of the horse.  How does this fit in with the idea of “emigrants”?
