Cooking/Nutrition and Spanish Elective Class

Mrs. Cervantes

Dear Parent:

I am excited to welcome your child into to my Cooking/Nutrition and Spanish elective class.   It has been a long time coming…..waiting for my new kitchen in this great new school of ours, and I am thrilled.  We are going to have a lot of fun this trimester.

The title of this elective may be confusing….let me clarify.   During this trimester, your child will have all of the subjects in this one class.   We will cook on one day, learn nutrition on another and work on basic Spanish vocabulary on another.

Here are the basics:

Cooking:

My cooking classes are very fun.   Your child will learn basic cooking skills such as chopping, grating, mixing, etc…  Kitchen safety is a priority so rules are strictly enforced.

·        I encourage children to try new foods, but I don’t force children to eat, however they MUST help in the preparation.   This is a requirement.

·        No special snacks will be provided for children who don’t/can’t eat what we make that day.

Please take a minute to write me a letter notifying me of any true allergies your child has.  Not aversions, but true allergies.   Make sure you let me know how allergic the child may be and if special meds are on the premise.   (most commonly this is related to a nut or shellfish allergies)

Nutrition:

Children will learn how important it is to lead a healthy lifestyle.   They will learn the fundamentals of eating right, getting lots of exercise, drinking lots of water and getting enough sleep.   We do this through games, art projects, skits, etc….

Spanish:

This is a basic Spanish vocabulary class.  Your child will learn basic vocabulary like their colors, numbers, food items, household objects, etc …

Fee:

There is a $25 fee for this class.

With this fee, RSA will provide all the materials needed for this class.  Please pay this fee to the office.

Grading:

Your child will be graded according to their participation.   Your child will be given a daily grade for their participation which ranges from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent).   This daily grade includes a participation score for all three subjects….cooking, nutrition and Spanish.

Cookbooks:

In the past, I’ve done individual cookbooks of all the recipes we’ve cooked for the trimester, however…..in an effort to be more “Green”, I am going to be blogging the recipes and nutrition ideas for the class.  Visit my blog at www.RSAcooks.blogspot.com

Helpers:

I need helpers on my cooking day.  It is one hour a week, during the time your child has my class.   It is a fun way to get your volunteer hours!   It isn’t necessary to be an expert chef……just be willing to help!  Email me if you are interested.

I am looking forward to an exciting year in our new school and new kitchen!

Sincerely,

Barbe Cervantes
