麦老师 / Mr. Dressel’s Mandarin Immersion

First Grade Classroom of Little Panda Pals Welcomes You!

Hello My Name Is... 麦老师

"Teacher Mai" Mr. Dressel

<Howdy, Ho ... Below's My Brief Bio>

Greetings, dear visitor! Thanks for stopping by and taking a moment to learn a bit about me. I live a life of split personalities -- There is English-speaking Mike Dressel and my Chinese alias, Mandarin-speaking "Teacher Mai" ( 麦老师 ). I have been a California-credentialed public school teacher for 24 years. The start of the 2023-24 school year will mark my 15th year as a Mandarin Immersion teacher at RSA. I am happily married to our RSA's former Kindergarten Teacher / Mandarin Intervention Coach, (now retired) Mrs. Rachel Chen Dressel, (38 years now !!). Together, we have 2 children, a son Aaron and a daughter, Christine ( who has followed her parents' footsteps into education as well in Glenn County, CA. ). I have been studying Chinese since 1981, and have lived before in both Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Besides teaching, I gain enjoyment from Thrift Store shopping, watching movies, and building a film library, and those simple little pleasures in life, like visits to Barnes and Nobles, or relaxing with a cup of good coffee from Dutch Bros. or Starbucks.

It is with great joy that I continue to teach First Grade Mandarin Immersion at RSA in room 15, partnering with my fabulous English Team Teacher, Mrs. Melinda Lynam, who is in room 13. As always, I look forward to getting to know each child who enters my classroom, and to guiding each one in the four fundamentals of Mandarin Chinese second language learning. With topic-based instruction, students integrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while discovering and learning through Math, Language Arts, Science, or just exploring and gaining an appreciation for the wonder and fascination of Chinese culture in all its richness.
